A Letter to the Woman Who’s Tired of Being Strong
Dear Evolving Woman,
I know what it feels like when everyone sees you as the one who can handle it.
You are the woman people call when something goes wrong.
You listen, help, fix, comfort, and keep moving, even when your own life feels heavy.
You may be carrying family problems, money worries, work stress, disappointment, grief, or the pain of people you love not showing up for you.
Still, you get up.
You answer the phone.
You do what needs to be done.
From the outside, that may look like strength.
On the inside, it can feel like you have been left alone with too much for too long.
I understand that.
There have been many times in my life when I did not feel strong at all.
I was just the person who had no choice but to keep going.
People saw that I was standing, but they did not always see how tired I was, how much I was holding in, or how badly I wanted someone to say, “I have you. You can rest.”
Sometimes being called strong doesn’t feel like a compliment.
Sometimes it feels like people have decided you don’t need care, help, patience, or support.
They trust that you will figure it out because you always have.
But just because you can carry something doesn’t mean you should have to carry it alone.
You are allowed to be tired.
You are allowed to admit that something hurts.
You are allowed to stop pretending you are fine just because other people are uncomfortable with your honesty.
You don’t have to earn rest by reaching the point where you completely fall apart.
That is something I am still learning too.
I am learning that strength is not always staying quiet.
Sometimes strength is saying, “I cannot do this today.”
Sometimes it is asking for help.
Sometimes it is letting the phone ring.
Sometimes it is deciding that another person’s emergency doesn’t have to become your emergency.
You may feel guilty when you begin doing less for everyone else.
People who are used to your strength may not understand your limits.
They may act as though you have changed.
Maybe you have.
Maybe you are finally learning that being there for everyone should not cost you your peace, your health, or your whole sense of self.
You don’t have to stop being caring.
You don’t have to become hard.
You just need to remember that you are a person too.
You deserve the same patience you give everyone else.
You deserve to be checked on without having to ask.
You deserve relationships where you are not only valued for what you can do, fix, or carry.
And until more support finds you, please give some of it to yourself.
Take the nap.
Cancel the plan.
Say no without writing a long explanation.
Cry when you need to.
Sit in silence.
Let one thing go unfinished.
The world will keep moving.
Your worth will not disappear because you rested.
You are still strong when you pause, when you need comfort, and when you finally let someone see the weight you carry inside.
So, to the woman who is tired of being strong, I want you to remember this:
You don’t have to prove how much you can survive.
You have already survived enough.
Nothing meant for you will fall apart because you finally chose to rest.
And you will still be worthy, even when your hands are empty.
With Love,
Maya Ellis
