I can’t tell you how many years I spent making sure everybody else had what they needed while my own health sat quietly at the bottom of the list.

If the kids needed vitamins, I remembered.

If someone had an appointment, I put it on the calendar.

If the house needed something, I handled it.

But me?

I would buy the vitamins, take them for a few days, forget about them, and then act surprised when the bottle was still full two months later.

Somewhere between raising children, working, managing bills, caring for family, and carrying the quiet responsibilities women carry, I got used to treating my body like it could wait.

Then my 50s started talking louder.

My body wasn’t falling apart, but it was asking for attention.

I felt more tired than usual.

My sleep wasn’t as steady.

Stress sat in my body longer.

My energy didn’t bounce back the same way.

I wanted my mind clearer, my body stronger, and my future self-supported.

And honestly, menopause made me pay attention.

Once estrogen starts changing and then declining, it can affect more than hot flashes and moods.

It can touch our sleep, bones, heart health, muscle, joints, and the way we feel in our own body.

About four months ago, I started taking a few supplements consistently.

Nothing extreme.

Nothing trendy.

Just a few researched, practical things that made sense for this season of my life.

I also started drinking more water and walking five days a week, because supplements can’t carry the whole load by themselves.

A capsule can’t replace sleep, food, movement, sunlight, medical care, or listening to your body.

But for me, being consistent has helped.

Not in a dramatic overnight way.

More like, “Oh, I actually feel a little more supported.”

And at this age, I’ll take that.

Vitamin D3 and K2: The Pair That Belongs Together

One thing I didn’t fully understand until I started learning more about menopause was how much bone health matters after estrogen declines.

We hear about weight changes and hot flashes all the time, but we don’t always hear enough about bones.

After menopause, bone loss can speed up, which is why many women are encouraged to pay attention to vitamin D, calcium, walking, strength, and bone density as we age.

Vitamin D3 helps the body absorb calcium.

What I didn’t understand was why so many D3 supplements are paired with vitamin K2.

K2 supports proteins that help move calcium into places where we want it, like our bones and teeth.

It’s not magic, and every woman doesn’t need the same thing, but it helped me understand why they’re often talked about together.

When I started reading labels, MK7 stood out because it stays active in the body longer than some other forms of K2.

Bone health is one of those things we don’t always feel until there’s already a problem.

I don’t want to wait until something hurts, breaks, or scares me before I start caring.

The brand I personally gravitated toward was Thorne because it has a strong reputation for quality.

For a more affordable option, Doctor’s Best D3 and K2 with MK7 is another choice I saw come up often while researching.

Magnesium Glycinate: The One That Helped Me Understand Why Sleep Matters So Much

I don’t think anyone warned me how much sleep could change in midlife.

When I was younger, one bad night of sleep was annoying.

Now one bad night can make me feel off for days.

I feel it in my patience, focus, cravings, mood, and the way my body handles stress.

That’s what made me look closer at magnesium.

Magnesium is involved in muscle function, nerve function, and the body’s ability to calm down.

But what surprised me most was learning that all magnesium isn’t the same.

I used to think magnesium was just magnesium. Pick a bottle, take it, done.

No ma’am.

There are different forms.

Some are more known for digestion.

Some are used for deficiency.

Some are gentler for daily use.

Magnesium glycinate kept coming up for sleep and relaxation because it’s known for being easy on the stomach and well absorbed.

That’s the one I chose.

I didn’t wake up feeling twenty years younger.

Let’s be honest, that would have been nice.

But I did start noticing that my evenings felt calmer, and my sleep felt more steady when I stayed consistent.

Brands I saw recommended often were Thorne Magnesium Glycinate, Pure Encapsulations Magnesium Glycinate, and Doctor’s Best High Absorption Magnesium Glycinate.

I’ve been taking Thorne Magnesium Glycinate.

It was in my price range, had good reviews, and felt like a solid place for me to start.

Omega 3s: The Supplement I Wish I'd Taken More Seriously Earlier

Heart health wasn’t something I thought much about when I was younger.

Now I do.

Not out of fear, but out of maturity.

There comes a stage where we start realizing our health isn’t just about how we look or whether we can get through the day.

Omega 3 fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA, are found in fatty fish and have been studied for heart and brain health.

I also learned that plant based omega 3s are not the same as the EPA and DHA found in fish oil.

Our bodies can convert some plant based omega 3s, but that conversion can be limited.

This supplement wasn’t one I could “feel” right away.

But everything worth doing for our health doesn’t come with instant proof.

Some choices are deposits into the woman we’re becoming ten years from now.

The brand I kept seeing recommended was Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega because it has a strong reputation for quality and purity. That’s the one I’ve been taking.

Creatine: The One That Surprised Me

If someone had told me a few years ago that I’d be taking creatine, I probably would have laughed.

In my mind, creatine was for bodybuilders and people who knew how to use every machine at the gym without looking confused.

That was all I knew.

Then I started researching muscle loss, strength, and aging, and creatine kept showing up.

Not as a miracle.

Not as a magic fix.

But as one of the most studied supplements for supporting muscle strength and exercise performance.

And at this age, strength matters.

I’m not trying to look twenty-five.

I’m trying to carry groceries, get up from the floor, walk with confidence, protect my balance, and keep my independence as long as I can.

Creatine helps the body make quick energy in the cells.

Our muscles use it, but our brain uses energy too, which is why researchers have also looked at creatine and brain health.

The research around memory and thinking is still growing, but it was enough to make me curious.

The form I kept seeing recommended was creatine monohydrate.

Nothing fancy.

Nothing complicated.

When I first started, I used a flavored powder that mixed into water.

Now I take the pills because they fit better into my routine.

Thorne Creatine is one trusted option, while Nutricost Creatine Monohydrate is a more affordable choice.

I chose Nutricost because it fit my budget at the time.

Everyday women are trying to take care of ourselves while still watching groceries, gas, bills, and everything else.

A Quick Reminder About Menopause Blends

I know many of us have seen the menopause supplements that promise to help with everything.

Stress.

Sleep.

Hormones.

Hot flashes.

Mood.

Energy.

And honestly, I understand the appeal.

Sometimes we want one bottle instead of five.

We want relief.

We want to feel like ourselves again without needing a science degree to understand the label.

Some blends include ingredients like black cohosh, ashwagandha, chasteberry, soy, or other herbs that are often marketed to women in menopause.

Here’s where I think we have to be careful.

Natural doesn’t always mean harmless.

Some herbs can interact with medications, affect hormones, or cause side effects for certain women.

Black cohosh, for example, is popular for menopause symptoms, but research has been mixed, and there have been rare concerns about liver problems.

That doesn’t mean every blend is bad.

It means we deserve to read the label, ask questions, and talk to our doctor if we’re taking medication or dealing with health issues.

Also, combination supplements can contain smaller amounts of each ingredient than you might expect.

So, the front of the bottle may sound powerful, but the actual label tells the real story.

What I've Learned

The biggest thing I’ve learned isn’t really about supplements.

It’s about attention.

For years, I paid attention to everybody else.

Their appointments.

Their meals.

Their moods.

 Their needs.

Their emergencies.

Their lives.

And somewhere along the way, I stopped listening closely to my own body.

Not because I didn’t care, but because I was busy surviving.

I think a lot of women understand that.

We can become so good at holding everything together that we don’t notice when we’re the one falling apart quietly.

These days, taking my supplements in the morning feels bigger than swallowing a few capsules.

It feels like a reminder.

I matter too.

My body matters too.

My future matters too.

Getting older doesn’t mean giving up on feeling strong, clear headed, rested, and healthy. It means we may have to become more intentional than we used to be.

If you’re standing where I was a few months ago, wondering whether it’s finally time to take your health more seriously, maybe this is your sign.

Not to buy everything.

Not to panic.

Not to compare your body to anybody else’s.

Just to start paying attention.

Drink the water.

Take the walk.

Ask for the lab work.

Read the label.

Talk to your doctor.

Choose one small habit that reminds you that your body has carried you through every season of your life.

Maybe now it’s time we carry her with a little more care.

Evolving Womanhood

Evolving Womanhood is for the woman who is still becoming while life keeps unfolding around her. The one who has carried a lot, grown through what she did not choose, and is learning to come back to herself again.

This space is about healing, self-respect, and trusting yourself more with each season. Not having it all figured out but staying present as you grow.

Womanhood shifts and evolves, and so do you.

As women, we spend so much of our lives taking care of everyone else that sometimes we forget to check in with ourselves.

  • Our thoughts stay trapped in our heads.

  • Our feelings go unspoken.

  • Our dreams get pushed to "someday."

Journaling gives us a place to slow down, listen to ourselves again, and reconnect with the woman underneath all the responsibilities.

Because sometimes the most important conversation, we'll ever have is the one we have with ourselves.
